Joya Launch

May 2004

One of the original masters of Ibizan Balearic chillout, Phil Mison, launches his new (and only) London residency, JOYA, on Wednesday nights at one of the capital’s original DJ bars, Sosho in Shoreditch. Wednesday 28 April, 2004 – Ibiza chillout legend, Phil Mison, will be taking up his first ever mid week residency in London, starting Wednesday 12 May, at one of the capital’s best late night music destinations, Sosho in Shoreditch. The brand new Wednesday club night, JOYA (pronounced hoy-ya), will be unique in London and feature guest DJs like Rob Da Bank (Sunday Best), Chris Coco (Radio 1 Blue Room), Ravin (Buddha Bar Paris) and Pete Gooding (Café Mambo). Despite this line-up of great DJs, there is no door charge at JOYA. The launch of JOYA marks a decade since Phil’s first summer as resident DJ at the now legendary Café del Mar on Ibiza’s sunset strip, mixing a new kind of easy house which traces its roots back to the experimental work of classical musicians Erik Satie* and which has come to represent the magic of Ibizan summers – cool tides, Mediterranean heat and panoramic sunsets. The subsequent launch of the UK’s first ever chillout album, ‘Original Chillout’, mixed and compiled by Phil, defined a brand new music genre which immediately captured the world’s attention. During the 1990s the launch of the ‘Original Chillout’ album inspired the cream of DJ talent to invite Phil to play at gigs and clubs from Brighton to Brazil, including Darren Emerson, Eric Morillo, Rob Da Bank, Jose Padilla and Carl Cox, and led to Phil working as tour DJ for Leftfield. The popularity of his style of relaxed summertime house music has inspired hundreds of commercial spin offs including cult compilations like Zero 7, Air, Lemon Jelly, as well as Amsterdam’s Supper Club series, Paris lounge bar compilations like St Germain and festivals like The Big Chill. Phil has produced a series of highly acclaimed compilations under various labels, including the Chillout, Soundcolours and Real Ibiza series featuring tracks like Nick Holder’s ‘Summer Daze’ and Beth Orton’s ‘Central Reservation’ - his next album, Real Ibiza 7 (React), releases next month. *BBC Radio 2, Saturday 22 May, 9pm-10pm, Saturday Night Chill tells the story of the ‘chillout’ music phenomenon, presented by Chris Coco with interviews from Phil Mison and José Padilla (Café del Mar legend). Sosho – brand new basement lounge bar Sosho’s basement lounge bar has been totally refurbished and doubled in size to create a den of underground sounds with leather banquettes, an eclectic display of party porn and a private room for two. Since Sosho opened in 2000, this former photographic studio has been hosting great club nights with quality DJs for clued up Londoners at a snip of the prices charged by other London clubs (£3 Thu/£4 Fri/£5 Sat after 9pm). DJs like Radio One’s dancefloor jazz hero, Gilles Peterson, Cosmo from The Loft in NYC and Lazy Dog’s Jay Hannan have played to a great crowd, indulging themselves with world class cocktails and serious food served inside the bare brick walls and lofty ceilings of this Shoreditch hideaway; complete with sink-in-sofas, disco glitter balls, art installations, candles, chandeliers and alcoves.
